What We Do: Clean Water and Sanitation

Poor water quality is a major threat to human health in the world today. Diarrheal disease is responsible for the deaths of 1.8 million people every year (WHO, 2004). 88% of these deaths are due to unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene and is mostly concentrated on children in developing countries.

All of our sister schools have to confront the problem of the lack of safe drinking water. Our schools often serve close to one thousand students so sanitation is also a major concern and poses a threat to the health of our students and teachers. From the moment we began working with our first sister school, we have been partnering with local school communities to address these challenges. To date we have assisted in the construction of rainwater harvesting systems, the purchase of water storage tanks, as well as the construction of pit latrines.

Positive Planet is working with students in the Key Club the High School of American Studies at Lehman College to raise funds to do water and sanitation assessments and then to put in place clean water and safe, environmentally friendly sanitation systems for each and every school in our program. We are also partnering with COWESER, (Community Welfare Services) a community organization in the Rakai District to implement sustainable solutions to this problem
